Prof Mark Ferguson named Irish co-chair of US-Ireland R&D Partnership

Prof Mark Ferguson will supply guidance and foster educational and specialist associations amongst Ireland, the US and Northern Ireland scientific leaders.

Just months after Prof Mark Ferguson departed his part as director general of Science Basis Ireland (SFI), he has been appointed as Ireland co-chair to the US-Eire R&D Partnership steering team.

The partnership was proven in 2006 and is based on the principles of The Good Friday Settlement. It includes the governments of the US, Eire and Northern Eire performing alongside one another to advance scientific development.

Ferguson will characterize the Irish jurisdiction in co-functioning with representatives from the other two territories. The steering team can award competitive exploration grants in parts ranging from cybersecurity and telecoms to energy and health.

As Eire co-chair, Ferguson is tasked with providing strategic way to the do the job of the partnership. In addition, he will function to continue on developing relationships with essential players of the steering team, together with the Irish members and the co-chairs representing the US and Northern Eire.

He will be supported by the Office of More and Better Education and learning, Analysis, Innovation and Science, and InterTradeIreland.

Announcing Ferguson’s appointment now (16 June), Minister for Even more and Larger Education and learning, Investigation, Innovation and Science Simon Harris, TD, praised the outgoing Ireland co-chair, Feargal Ó Móráin.

The other Irish associates of the US-Ireland R&D Partnership steering group are Prof Philip Nolan, Ferguson’s successor as director general of SFI Dr Mairead O’Driscoll, main govt of the Wellbeing Research Board and Dr Karl Walsh, senior inspector and head of division of the investigation and Codex division at the Office of Agriculture, Meals and the Marine.

Ferguson’s role as co-chair of the Eire jurisdiction will not be remunerated. His journey and expenditures will be offered by InterTradeIreland.

In March of this year, seven US-Eire investigation initiatives obtained a €9m joint financial commitment from SFI, the Countrywide Science Foundation in the US and the Office for the Financial system in Northern Ireland less than the programme.

To date the partnership has lifted all-around €121m and funded 75 initiatives from a combination of sources from all 3 jurisdictions. In Eire, the resources for funding incorporate SFI, the Well being Exploration Board and the Section of Agriculture, Foodstuff and the Marine in Ireland.

In Northern Eire, initiatives from Overall health and Social Care R&D, in partnership with the Healthcare Study Council, the Department of Work and Mastering and Invest NI have all received grants.
